what I gave up
2003-10-31 @ 7:12 a.m.

My brother picked me up from the train station. On the way home, we were discussing the perils of bar-hopping in a rural area:

Brother: No matter how crappy the bars are and how much you hate sitting in them [exaggeration on his part], the good thing is you never really have to drive home drunk. There's always someone you can call to come pick you up. Also, at the Hitching Post, you know if you get too bad you can always go upstairs [to the bartender's apartment] and sleep, wake up the next morning and go home.

Me: You? Or everybody?

Brother: Anybody that wants, I guess--there's always someone up there. And then at the Spur, it's so close [five miles] that if you ask, one of the bartenders will always drive you home. That's not too far, they don't mind.
